The political landscape of Enugu State has been shaken by the sudden passing of Senator Okey Ezea, the lawmaker representing Enugu North Senatorial District. The Labour Party senator breathed his last on Tuesday, November 19, while receiving medical care in the United Kingdom.
Political Journey and Career Highlights
Born on 11 August 1963 to the family of Late Chief James Ezea of Itchi, Igbo-Eze South, and Mrs Theresa Ezea of Nsukka Urban, Senator Ezea dedicated much of his life to public service and political engagement. His political career spanned several decades and witnessed significant transitions between major political parties.
In 2013, Senator Ezea played a pivotal role in establishing the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State, demonstrating his commitment to building strong political institutions. His dedication to the party saw him emerge as the gubernatorial candidate in 2015, though he was unsuccessful in his bid for the state's top position.
Transition to Labour Party and Senate Victory
After years of service within the APC framework, Senator Ezea's political journey took a significant turn in 2018 when he was appointed chairman of the governing board of the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo. He held this position with distinction until 2022, when he made the strategic decision to resign and join the Labour Party.
This move proved fruitful when he secured the Labour Party's senatorial ticket later that year and went on to achieve electoral victory on 25 February 2023. His election made him the only remaining National Assembly member from Enugu State on the Labour Party platform, a testament to his political influence and the trust constituents placed in his leadership.
Legacy and Condolences
Senator Ezea's untimely death has created a significant void in Enugu State's political representation and the Labour Party's presence in the National Assembly. As the sole Labour Party representative from the state in the federal legislature, his absence will be deeply felt in ongoing legislative proceedings and constituency representation.
The news of his passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from political associates, constituents, and family members who remember him as a dedicated public servant committed to the development of his senatorial district and Enugu State at large.
May his soul rest in peace, Amen.
