Sokoto Government to Fund Annual Ramadan Tafseer, Ends Appeal Fund Appeals
In a significant move to bolster Islamic activities, Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu has declared that his administration will now take full responsibility for supporting the annual Ramadan Tafseer organized by Izala groups within the state. This decision effectively ends the longstanding practice of these groups raising appeal funds each year to conduct the religious event.
Governor's Assurance During Sallah Homage Visits
Governor Aliyu made this announcement while receiving separate Sallah homage visits from Izala groups based in Kaduna and Jos. According to a statement issued by Abubakar Bawa, the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House, the governor emphasized that promoting Islamic affairs remains a top priority for his administration.
"I don't think it is appropriate for us in Sokoto to allow you to continue raising appeal funds every year to conduct the Ramadan Tafseer," Governor Aliyu stated. "We will henceforth set up a committee to assess your financial requirements for the conduct of the Tafseer, with a view to possible government intervention."
Commendation and Future Support for Islamic Activities
The governor commended the Izala groups for their dedication to promoting Islamic ideals and propagating Da'awah both nationally and internationally. He praised the orderly and impactful manner in which this year's Ramadan Tafseer was conducted and prayed for Allah's abundant rewards for their efforts.
Governor Aliyu also appealed to Islamic preachers to focus more on teaching Muslims the basic tenets of Islam, enabling proper worship of their Creator. He assured that the government is ready to support religious bodies in organizing or attending seminars and conferences on Islamic affairs, both within Nigeria and abroad.
Broader Initiatives in Islamic Affairs
In addition to funding the Tafseer, Governor Aliyu highlighted that his administration will continue to support various Islamic activities. For the current fiscal year, attention will be given to:
- Construction and renovation of Islamiyya schools across the state.
- Improvement of cemeteries to ensure better facilities.
Recognition from Izala Leaders
During the visits, Sheikh Abubakar Mabera, leader of the Jama'atu Izalatil Bid'ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) Jos branch, commended Governor Aliyu for his ongoing support of Islamic affairs in Sokoto. He noted that many mosques have been built and renovated under the governor's tenure, and the support extended to Imams, Deputy Imams, Mu'azzins, and Islamic preachers has significantly enhanced their ability to perform religious duties.
Sheikh Mabera also mentioned that the JIBWIS in Jos undertakes medical outreach programs for the benefit of the Ummah, alongside their Islamic preaching activities. Similarly, Sheikh Awwal Romo, leader of the JIBWIS Kaduna branch, praised the governor's support for Islam and humanity in Sokoto, assuring continued backing at all times.
Additional Engagement with Local Government Officials
In a related development, Governor Aliyu also received the 23 Local Government Secretaries Forum, led by Alhaji Shehu Goronyo, further demonstrating his administration's commitment to engaging with various stakeholders in the state.
