South Africans will enjoy an additional public holiday on Monday, 10 August 2026, after National Women's Day falls on a Sunday, 9 August. This automatic day off is mandated by the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994, which states that whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a public holiday.
The Labour Appeal Court in Randfontein Estates Ltd v National Union of Mineworkers confirmed that the Monday holiday is "in addition to" the Sunday public holiday, not a replacement. Both days retain their status, meaning workers get two consecutive paid holidays.
How the Act Treats Sundays vs. Saturdays
The Act draws a clear distinction between public holidays on Sundays and those on Saturdays. When a public holiday falls on a Saturday, no extra day is granted; the holiday is observed only on the Saturday itself. There is no provision for a Friday or Monday off in those cases.
However, Section 2(2) of the Act allows employers and workers to swap a public holiday for another agreed day, provided both parties consent. This flexibility is often used in industries that cannot shut down on the designated day.
November Election Holiday Also Expected
The August long weekend is the first of two additional public holidays this year. The second is set for Wednesday, 4 November, when South Africa holds its 2026 local government elections. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the date in April following the Extended Presidential Coordinating Council meeting.
Election days in South Africa have historically been declared public holidays to ensure voter access. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) confirmed that 4 November will carry that designation. Concerns about disruptions to matric exams were addressed, as many schools double as voting stations.
Parliament's Standing Committee on Appropriations chairperson Mmusi Maimane said: "The IEC replied that through consultation with the Department of Basic Education, there will be minimal disruptions to matriculants as the day will be designated as a public holiday."
Formal Steps Before November Holiday
Ramaphosa noted that Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa supported the November date because it falls outside the festive season, which is expected to improve voter turnout and limit school impact. Before the holiday becomes official, Hlabisa must proclaim the election date in the Government Gazette, and Ramaphosa will issue a separate proclamation declaring the day a public holiday closer to the election.
South Africans can look forward to a well-deserved long weekend in August, with the November election holiday providing another mid-week break to facilitate civic participation.
