Southeast Reps Urge Tinubu to Pardon Nnamdi Kanu

The Southeast Caucus in the House of Representatives has made a direct appeal to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to use his constitutional authority to grant a pardon to the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The plea was made public on Monday, November 24, 2025, following an emergency meeting held by the lawmakers in Abuja.

Appeal for a Political and Humanitarian Solution

The caucus stated that while they respect the judiciary and the legal process that led to Nnamdi Kanu's life imprisonment last week, the situation has grown into a broader national issue. They emphasized that a purely legal approach is no longer sufficient. "The situation has evolved into a wider national concern that now demands a political solution," the lawmakers asserted in their official statement.

Impact on Southeast Stability and Economy

The representatives highlighted the severe consequences of Kanu's continued detention on the Southeast region. They reported that his imprisonment has heightened tensions and fueled agitation, leading to a cycle of civil unrest and security operations. This volatile atmosphere has had a tangible economic and social impact, including:

  • Frequent closures of markets
  • Disruptions to school calendars
  • A significant reduction in commercial activity
  • A pervasive climate of fear among residents

The caucus warned that these conditions place immense emotional and economic strain on families and communities.

Constitutional Powers and a Path to Peace

The lawmakers pointed to Section 175 of the Nigerian Constitution, which grants the President the power of pardon. They argued that this provision was designed for complex national challenges like this one, where statesmanship is required beyond the strict application of the law. They believe a presidential act of clemency would be a powerful symbol of inclusiveness and could de-escalate the current tensions.

"An act of presidential mercy at this critical moment has the potential to de-escalate tensions, restore normalcy, and reduce the recurring cycle of security operations and civil resistance," the statement read. The caucus is convinced that such a move would open the door for meaningful dialogue between the Federal Government, elected officials, and community stakeholders, creating a more sustainable path to peace. They also called on residents of the Southeast to remain calm and law-abiding while these efforts are underway.

Nnamdi Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment after being arraigned by the Department of State Services (DSS) on charges of terrorism and treasonable felony. He has since been transferred to a prison facility in Sokoto State.
