President Tinubu's Birthday Tribute to Former Political Opponent

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Chief Olisa Metuh, the former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as he marks his 60th birthday anniversary. The President specifically praised Metuh's significant contributions as a bridge-builder within Nigeria's complex political environment.

Recognition of Political Reconciliation Efforts

In an official statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu acknowledged Metuh's dedicated efforts toward fostering national unity and cohesion. The President described the former PDP spokesman as "a significant voice of reason at a time of cacophony" in Nigerian politics.

Metuh, who served as the PDP's national spokesman from 2012 to 2016, has in recent years engaged in various initiatives promoting dialogue across partisan and ethnic divides. President Tinubu commended his substantial contribution to facilitating constructive discussions among Nigeria's diverse political actors and encouraged him to continue supporting national development initiatives.

The presidential statement included prayers for Metuh to enjoy many more decades in robust health, while also noting his ongoing humanitarian engagements that extend beyond political activities.

Metuh's Transition from Partisan Politics

According to reports from The Guardian, Metuh formally resigned his membership from the PDP in October 2022, citing a definitive decision to withdraw from partisan politics in Nigeria. In his resignation letter dated October 25, 2022, addressed to the then PDP national chairman Iyorchia Ayu, Metuh explained that a three-week trip for medical and personal reasons led him to the realization that he could no longer actively participate in partisan politics.

Metuh stated in his resignation letter: "During my three weeks trip for medical and personal reasons, I came to the realisation that I can no longer play partisan politics in Nigeria. From my experience and the nature of politics and development in Nigeria, I believe that I will contribute more to democracy and good governance in Nigeria by being non-partisan."

The former PDP spokesman emphasized that being non-partisan would give him the appropriate status to work for the strategic interest and well-being of the Nigerian people without the limitations of partisanship.

Reflecting on his extensive political career, Metuh noted his proud achievements within the main opposition party, including being the longest elected serving member of the National Executive Committee, having won elections to serve in several national positions at six consecutive national conventions of the party.

Metuh, a trained lawyer and established businessman, has maintained an active presence in Nigeria's political discourse, consistently emphasizing themes of reconciliation and national unity. President Tinubu concluded his birthday message by wishing the former PDP spokesman a joyful celebration and renewed strength as he reaches this significant milestone of 60 years.
