President Bola Tinubu on Monday, June 1, 2026, hosted his Benin Republic counterpart, President Romuald Wadagni, at his Bourdillon residence in Lagos. The visit comes just a week after Wadagni was sworn into office on Sunday, May 24.
Private Visit to Tinubu's Country Home
According to Bayo Onanuga, the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Wadagni was in Lagos on a private visit to the Nigerian leader at his country home. The meeting underscores the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and Benin Republic.
Background of Nigeria's Role in Benin's Stability
The visit follows months after President Tinubu led the Nigerian military to intervene and stop a military coup in the neighbouring country. The coup attempt occurred on December 7 and 8, 2025, against then-President Patrice Talon. During that period, Nigeria deployed fighter jets and troops to Benin Republic, helping loyalist forces restore democratic institutions.
The successful intervention reinforced Nigeria's role as a regional power and stabilising force in West Africa. Wadagni's visit is seen as a gesture of gratitude and a continuation of diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
This meeting highlights the importance of regional cooperation and the commitment of both leaders to uphold democracy and security in the region.
