The attack in Angwan Rukuba, which occurred on March 29, 2026, resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 28 individuals and left many others injured. This incident has raised fresh alarms about safety in the state capital, prompting immediate federal and state-level interventions.
Federal Government Activates Coordinated Security Response
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed in Abuja that the Federal Government has activated a coordinated response to contain the situation and prevent further escalation. He assured Nigerians that security agencies responded swiftly to the Angwan Rukuba attack, with troops from Operation Enduring Peace (OPED) rapidly mobilized to the scene following distress calls.
Idris detailed that military and other security forces have cordoned off the affected area, secured key access routes, and launched targeted clearance operations to track down the perpetrators. He maintained that while the killings are regrettable, they do not represent a breakdown of national security but are criminal acts being decisively addressed by authorities.
Plateau State Imposes Curfew and Senate Orders Investigation
In response to the violence, the Plateau State Government has imposed a curfew in parts of Jos to stabilize the security environment and prevent reprisals. Concurrently, the Senate has directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the Jos attacks. The upper chamber mandated that those responsible be identified, arrested, and prosecuted to restore public confidence and deter future violence.
The Senate resolution followed a motion moved by Diket Plang (APC, Plateau), supported by Simon Lalong and Pam Dachungyang, highlighting the urgent need to upscale security operations in Kanam and Jos North Local Councils.
