President Tinubu Convenes Security Chiefs, Summons Plateau Governor Over Jos Violence
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken decisive action in response to the escalating security situation in Plateau State, holding an urgent meeting with top security and intelligence chiefs on Tuesday. In a significant move, the President also summoned Governor Caleb Mutfwang to Abuja for immediate consultations aimed at addressing the crisis.
Deadly Attack in Angwan Rukuba Sparks Federal Response
The federal intervention follows a recent violent incident in the Angwan Rukuba district of Jos, where armed assailants reportedly killed at least twenty-eight individuals and left numerous others injured. This attack has reignited serious concerns about safety and stability in the state capital, prompting swift governmental action.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed these developments during a press briefing in Abuja. He emphasized that the Federal Government has activated a coordinated response strategy to contain the volatile situation and prevent any further escalation of violence across the region.
Coordinated Security Measures and Joint Strategy
According to Minister Idris, Governor Mutfwang has been formally invited to meet with President Tinubu to collaboratively develop a joint strategy focused on restoring lasting peace to Plateau State. The outcomes of this high-level engagement are expected to be made public to ensure transparency and reassure the populace.
Idris provided assurances that security agencies responded rapidly to the Angwan Rukuba attack, with troops from Operation Enduring Peace being swiftly mobilized to the scene after distress calls were received. The military and other security forces have effectively cordoned off the affected area, secured key access routes, and initiated targeted clearance operations to apprehend the perpetrators.
Enhanced Security Operations and Proactive Measures
The minister highlighted that the prompt intervention successfully contained the violence, even as security forces have intensified their operations across vulnerable communities in Plateau and the broader North-Central region. Reinforced surveillance systems, increased troop deployments, and joint patrols involving the military and police have been activated in high-risk areas to proactively neutralize potential threats.
"These coordinated efforts are meticulously designed to maintain stability and safeguard the lives and property of all citizens," Idris stated. He stressed the Federal Government's unwavering resolve to dismantle criminal networks through sustained military offensives and intelligence-led missions, ensuring no safe haven for lawbreakers.
State Government Actions and Ongoing Investigations
In reaction to the incident, the Plateau State Government has imposed a curfew in specific parts of Jos to stabilize the security environment and prevent any retaliatory actions. Investigations into the attack are currently ongoing, with authorities working diligently to uncover the full details and hold those responsible accountable.
While describing the killings as deeply regrettable, Idris maintained that this incident does not signify a breakdown of national security. Instead, he characterized it as a criminal act that is being decisively addressed by the authorities, with ongoing operations already yielding actionable intelligence to facilitate arrests.
International Collaboration and Public Appeal
The minister also confirmed that Nigeria's security collaboration with the United States remains active, with American security personnel working closely alongside Nigerian intelligence agencies to enhance efforts in tracking criminal elements. This partnership aims to bolster the overall effectiveness of security measures in the region.
Idris urged residents to remain calm, cooperate fully with security agencies, and refrain from spreading unverified information that could exacerbate tensions. Plateau State has experienced recurring cycles of violence over the years, and the latest Angwan Rukuba attack underscores the persistent security challenges, necessitating renewed federal intervention to achieve sustainable peace.
