Mixed Reactions Mark President Tinubu's 74th Birthday Amid National Challenges
President Bola Tinubu's 74th birthday, typically an occasion for celebration, was met with a blend of criticism and praise from political quarters, reflecting the complex political landscape in Nigeria. The opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) delivered a sharp critique, while the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) offered commendation, as the President himself chose a subdued observance in line with the national mood.
ADC's Critical Birthday Message
In a birthday message that eschewed traditional eulogies, the ADC highlighted significant challenges under Tinubu's administration. The party's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, took to social media to note that Nigeria has risen to fourth place on the global terrorism index, with insurgent violence claiming lives hourly. Abdullahi pointed to a nearly 500 percent increase in fuel prices, which has made basic transportation a daily struggle for survival, exacerbating poverty across the nation.
"Under your watch, fuel prices have risen by nearly 500 percent, turning basic transportation into a daily calculation of survival," Abdullahi stated. He urged the President to reflect on his leadership, emphasizing the loss of lives as a failure and calling for more serious governance as he enters his final year in office. Despite the criticism, Abdullahi wished Tinubu good health and improved judgment.
APC's Praise for Tinubu's Leadership
Contrasting sharply with the ADC's stance, the APC issued a congratulatory message lauding Tinubu as a veteran democrat, statesman, and patriot. In a statement by National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, the party asserted that Nigeria is steadily regaining its standing in the global community under Tinubu's leadership. The APC credited the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda for driving reforms in key sectors such as the economy, infrastructure, and public institutions.
"Under Tinubu, Nigeria is steadily regaining its standing in the global community," Morka declared, joining millions of Nigerians and well-wishers worldwide in celebrating the President's birthday.
First Lady's Personal Tribute
Amid the political discourse, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu offered a deeply personal and emotional tribute to her husband. In a message that resonated widely, she expressed her love and pride, stating, "Akanbi, omoolodo ide. I love you, and I am so proud of you." Her words blended personal affection with a reflection on Tinubu's leadership during a pivotal time for the nation, providing a rare glimpse into the personal bond behind the presidency.
Tinubu's Low-Key Observance and National Reflection
President Tinubu marked his birthday in a low-key manner, consistent with his tradition of aligning such celebrations with the national mood. He acknowledged the tough economic situation faced by Nigerians, worsened by global events like the Israel-United States war on Iran, and stressed that the sacrifices made under his administration's reforms are beginning to yield results.
"Consistent with my tradition over the years to mark my birthday in line with the mood of the nation each year, I resolved to also observe this year’s birthday low-key," Tinubu explained. He thanked his wife, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and others for their felicitations, emphasizing that the gains recorded are a collective achievement.
This birthday event underscores the polarized political environment in Nigeria, with Tinubu's leadership drawing both sharp criticism and strong support as the nation navigates ongoing challenges.
