The House of Representatives has officially recognized Frederick Agbedi as the Minority Leader, following the withdrawal of Ikenga Ugochinyere's claim to the position. The decision was announced during plenary on Wednesday, bringing an end to weeks of intense political maneuvering within the opposition caucus.
Background of the Leadership Dispute
The controversy began after the former Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, resigned following his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This created a vacuum that sparked a fierce competition among opposition lawmakers to fill the position. Ugochinyere had initially secured the backing of 61 out of 81 minority lawmakers, making him the preferred candidate. However, he voluntarily stepped aside, citing respect for the amended House rules.
Official Announcement by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced Agbedi's emergence after reading a communication from minority parties nominating their principal officers, in line with Order 7, Rule 7 of the House Standing Orders. Alongside Agbedi, Abdulsamad Dasuki was named Deputy Minority Leader, and Hon. Mansur Manu Soro was appointed Minority Whip. The Speaker congratulated the new officers and pledged the House leadership's support for the legislative agenda of the 10th Assembly.
Ugochinyere's Formal Withdrawal
Before the announcement, a letter from Ugochinyere was read on the floor. In the letter, addressed to the Speaker and written on behalf of 60 minority lawmakers, he formally withdrew the earlier nomination that had designated him as Minority Leader-designate. This move effectively ended the dispute that had tested the unity of the opposition caucus and sparked debates over the interpretation of House rules governing the selection of minority leaders.
Conclusion of Leadership Structure
With the recognition of Agbedi and the other principal officers, the House has now completed its leadership composition. This development is expected to foster stability and allow the opposition to focus on its legislative responsibilities.
