Vice President Kashim Shettima has officially flagged off the 2026 Hajj operations, marking the commencement of travel for thousands of Nigerian pilgrims. The ceremony was held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where approximately 5,000 pilgrims from Kogi State began their journey to Saudi Arabia. They are accompanied by over 150 officials and support personnel tasked with ensuring their welfare throughout the pilgrimage.
VP Shettima Urges Pilgrims to Uphold Values
Speaking at the event, the Vice President described the pilgrims as ambassadors of Nigeria on the global stage. He urged them to uphold values of humility, discipline, and integrity during the spiritual exercise. Shettima also noted that Hajj represents a strong bond between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all citizens. He said, “Mr. President understands that governance is ultimately a covenant of service to his citizens, and that every Nigerian life deserves care and attention.”
Kogi Governor Calls for Adherence to Rules
Also addressing the pilgrims, Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, called for strict adherence to the rules and guidelines of the pilgrimage. He encouraged them to conduct themselves in a way that reflects positively on Nigeria. “Let your conduct project a positive image of our great country,” he said. The event underscores the federal government's dedication to facilitating a smooth and safe Hajj experience for all Nigerian pilgrims.
