FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Addresses Uproar Over Remarks Against Journalist Seun Okinbaloye
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has publicly addressed the widespread criticism that followed his recent outburst against Seun Okinbaloye, a journalist from Channels Television. In a media chat on Friday, April 3, Wike clarified that his comments were misinterpreted and taken out of context, leading to a national uproar.
Wike's Controversial Statement and Allegations
During a live broadcast of the programme "Politics Today," Wike expressed frustration with Okinbaloye for allegedly speaking on behalf of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) rather than allowing the party to represent itself. The minister claimed that if he could bring Okinbaloye out from the television, he would have shot him, a remark that sparked intense backlash across Nigeria.
Wike accused the journalist of being unprofessional and taking sides by stating that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was stifling the opposition to ensure the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would be the only party on the ballot in the 2027 elections. This position had been previously voiced by the ADC, with INEC countering that the party ignored court orders.
Wike's Clarification and Resolution
In an interview on News Central TV, Wike insisted that his words were a figure of speech meant to convey his anger and were blown out of proportion due to political motivations. He emphasized that he has a longstanding relationship with Okinbaloye and has since reached out to the journalist to settle the matter privately. Wike stated, "In Nigeria, people blow everything out of context, particularly when people play politics with everything. Anybody who knows my relationship with Seun will not begin to rant."
The minister further explained that he believes Okinbaloye does not hold any grudge against him following their phone conversation. However, despite this resolution, many Nigerians and media groups continue to criticize Wike, demanding a public apology and retraction of his statement.
Political Context and Broader Implications
This controversy arises amid heightened political tension in Nigeria, with politicians frequently blaming the ruling APC for various issues. Wike, who serves as a minister under the APC-led administration, has faced scrutiny over his remarks, highlighting the volatile nature of political discourse in the country.
In related news, former Senate President Bukola Saraki recently commented on his friendship with Wike, clarifying that it should not be seen as an endorsement of President Bola Tinubu's 2027 ambitions. Saraki denied reports of secretly working for Tinubu, asserting his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its success.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges in media-politician relations and the impact of inflammatory rhetoric on public perception. As the situation develops, stakeholders are calling for greater professionalism and restraint in political communications to foster a more constructive national dialogue.
