Wike-Backed PDP Faction Elects New Leadership at 2026 National Convention
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has officially announced its new national leadership following a comprehensive convention held in Abuja. The faction elected Abdulrahman Mohammed as substantive National Chairman and Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary through a consensus process that also saw the selection of nineteen additional members for the party's National Working Committee (NWC).
Convention Proceedings and Key Attendees
The significant political gathering took place at the velodrome within the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Sunday, March 30, 2026, marking a pivotal moment for the faction as it seeks to consolidate its position within Nigeria's political landscape. The convention attracted numerous prominent political figures, including former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, all of whom participated in the proceedings that established the new leadership structure.
Former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who served as Chairman of the convention planning committee, confirmed that exactly 2,035 delegates participated in the electoral process. Ikpeazu emphasized that the party would maintain an open door policy for reconciliation following the convention, indicating potential avenues for internal resolution within the broader PDP framework.
Wike's Assurance on 2027 Electoral Participation
Addressing the assembled delegates, Nyesom Wike, identified as the national leader of this PDP faction, provided unequivocal assurance regarding the party's electoral future. "By the grace of God, the PDP will be on the ballot in 2027," Wike declared to enthusiastic cheers from convention participants. He specifically referenced questions raised by Senator Saraki and Senator Abba Moro about the party's electoral viability, providing definitive confirmation of their intention to contest the upcoming general elections.
Wike further characterized the convention as "the real convention" that had been properly monitored by electoral authorities and therefore carried official recognition. He praised delegates for their steadfastness during challenging periods, stating: "I congratulate all of you who stood firm when the storm raged. You showed exemplary resilience when push came to shove. You refused to be downcast when those who pretended to be leaders of the party betrayed you disgracefully."
New Leadership's Vision for Party Unity
Newly elected National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed outlined his vision for the party during his acceptance address, emphasizing themes of unity and renewal. "Today, we choose a higher path. We choose inclusiveness over exclusion, unity over division, we choose renewal over decline," Mohammed declared. He characterized the convention as not merely an electoral exercise but rather "about restoration, order, not just about position," suggesting a broader agenda of organizational revitalization.
Mohammed described the gathering as a moment of reflection and responsibility following a period of internal disagreement and legal contestation within the party. He assured members that the PDP under his leadership would belong to all members equally, urging party faithful to embrace inclusiveness as the faction repositions itself ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
Broader Context of PDP Internal Dynamics
The convention occurs against the backdrop of ongoing internal divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party, which has experienced factionalization resulting in two distinct groups. The Tanimu Turaki faction, supported by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, claims leadership on one side, while the Wike-backed faction now represents the other significant bloc within the party.
These divisions trace back to a convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025, which triggered a series of legal battles. On March 9, 2026, the Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld a Federal High Court ruling that restrained the PDP from holding the Ibadan convention. Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam determined that the party had violated constitutional provisions governing convention procedures, leading the Turaki faction to approach the Supreme Court to challenge this judgment.
The political maneuvering extends beyond internal leadership contests, with reports suggesting that the Wike-aligned faction has positioned itself to support President Bola Tinubu's potential re-election bid in 2027 rather than fielding a traditional opposition candidate. This strategic positioning adds another layer of complexity to Nigeria's evolving political landscape as parties begin preparations for the next national electoral cycle.
