Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has publicly addressed recent reports of a confrontation with a naval officer, firmly denying any ongoing rift with the Nigerian military while reaffirming his commitment to enforcing land regulations in Abuja.
No Conflict With Military, Wike Insists
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, November 13, the FCT Minister dismissed social media reports suggesting tension between his administration and the military as "false and mischievous". The clarification comes following an incident involving a naval officer at a disputed plot of land allegedly connected to a retired naval chief.
Wike emphasized that his respect for the Nigerian Armed Forces remains unwavering, stating: "I have respect for the military and will continue to respect them because I know what they stand for." He explained that any matters involving security agencies are properly addressed through official channels rather than public confrontation.
The minister outlined his protocol for resolving institutional matters: "If there is ever a problem, I know where to go, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Chiefs, or even the President. We resolve issues institutionally, not through confrontation."
Commitment to Abuja Master Plan
Wike defended his administration's strict adherence to the Abuja master plan and land use regulations. He revealed that some individuals who received land allocations for agricultural purposes had illegally converted the properties to residential or commercial developments.
"Government cannot function in a lawless society," Wike declared. "If we allow one person to violate the rules because of who he is, others will follow. That is how impunity begins. The law must apply to everyone equally."
The FCT Minister clarified that previous land disputes involving military authorities had been resolved peacefully through respectful engagement, establishing a precedent for institutional cooperation.
Media Responsibility and Rule of Law
Wike used the opportunity to caution journalists against spreading false information or sensationalizing events. He urged media professionals to practice proper investigative journalism and avoid taking statements out of context.
Reflecting on his governance approach, Wike stated: "You can't make everybody happy, even in your own home. But once your conscience is clear that you are doing the right thing, you stand by it."
Reaffirming his loyalty to President Bola Tinubu's vision for the capital city, Wike pledged to continue strict enforcement against illegal structures, land grabbing, and unauthorized developments. "As long as I remain FCT Minister, the law will take its course," he declared. "Abuja must reflect the image of Nigeria, disciplined, planned, and lawful."
The minister's strong stance comes amid ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of Abuja's urban planning while balancing respect for Nigeria's security institutions.
