Wike Denies Endorsing Rivers Candidates, Emphasizes Elders Council Role

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has firmly denied endorsing any aspirant for the 2027 governorship race or other elective offices in Rivers State. This statement comes amid increasing speculation within the state's political landscape, as Wike seeks to distance himself from rumors of private political alignments.

Endorsement Authority Rests with Elders Council, Not Personal Choice

Speaking on Monday in Abuja during a joint meeting of stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, Wike clarified that decisions on endorsements are the sole responsibility of the elders council led by Ferdinand Alabraba. He emphasized that this is not a matter of his personal preference or choice, reinforcing the council's authority in such political matters.

Wike dismissed claims that any private meetings or backroom arrangements have resulted in endorsements for candidates, asserting that his position remains unchanged both in public and private settings. He highlighted that his current political priority is focused elsewhere, with his only firm commitment being to support President Bola Tinubu's second term bid in the upcoming election cycle.

Warning Against Rushed Endorsements and Internal Divisions

Reflecting on past election cycles, Wike issued a warning against the practice of imposing candidates on Rivers voters. He noted that such moves have historically created tension and weakened internal cohesion within political parties. He urged political actors to avoid rushed endorsements, pointing out that unchecked ambition often fuels division and disrupts party unity.

"If we were not working together, if we were not united, it would be difficult. People are not happy that we are working together; so they will do anything to ensure we are divided," Wike stated, underscoring the importance of maintaining solidarity among leaders.

Unity as a Source of Political Strength in Rivers

Wike elaborated that the alliance currently shaping Rivers' politics derives its strength from unity and shared purpose rather than financial influence. According to him, cooperation among leaders has been instrumental in stabilizing political structures that previously faced significant internal challenges. He revisited recent developments within the PDP, crediting committed members for helping the party survive a major leadership crisis.

He mentioned that loyal stakeholders reclaimed the party during its national convention, which resulted in Abdulrahman Mohammed becoming the national chairman of a recognized faction. Wike maintained that sustained unity, rather than early endorsements, will be crucial for political success in Rivers as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually take shape.

Background on Wike's Political Stance

Earlier reports indicated that Wike had declared his support would be limited to candidates aligned with President Bola Tinubu in forthcoming area council elections in Abuja. He made this position clear at a public event, stating that his political backing would cut across party lines but only for candidates who openly support Tinubu's reelection bid. This aligns with his broader focus on supporting Tinubu's political agenda while avoiding premature endorsements in Rivers State.
