Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has responded to the wave of criticism he received from Nigerians after photos surfaced online showing him with his sons during an official assignment in the United Arab Emirates.
The former Rivers State governor didn't hold back during his response, firmly defending his decision to include his children in the diplomatic mission. "What is the problem there?" Wike questioned during an interaction with journalists in Abuja.
Wike's Justification: Educational Exposure
The minister explained that his sons were present to observe and learn about governance processes firsthand. "My sons are not criminals. They are not kids. They are graduates. So what is your problem?" he fired back at critics.
Wike emphasized the educational value of exposing young adults to international diplomacy and governance mechanisms. "If they want to learn, what is your problem? Is it when they are involved in drugs that you will be happy?" he challenged his detractors.
The Social Media Storm
The controversy erupted when pictures of Wike with his sons during the UAE official assignment circulated widely on social media platforms. Many Nigerians questioned the appropriateness of including family members on what was supposed to be official government business.
However, Wike remained unapologetic, framing the criticism as misplaced concern. "They are not the first children to travel with their parents. Even traditional rulers travel with their children," he noted, drawing parallels with established practices.
A Pattern of Defiance
This isn't the first time Wike has faced public scrutiny over his actions as FCT Minister. Known for his blunt responses and uncompromising stance, the minister has consistently defended his decisions against public criticism.
The UAE trip response continues this pattern, with Wike asserting his right to involve his family in educational aspects of governance while maintaining that his sons' presence didn't interfere with the official purpose of the assignment.
As the debate continues online, the incident highlights ongoing tensions between public officials' personal freedoms and public expectations of propriety in government affairs.
