The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has sent a crucial message to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, urging him to assert his authority against individuals who undermine his administration. The monarch stressed that justice must be paired with authority for effective governance in the state.
Speaking during his traditional post-Eid Sallah homage to the governor, a cultural practice in Kano, Sanusi quoted from the Qur'an to illustrate his point. He said: 'In the holy Quran, after Allah spoke about sending messengers and holy books, He also mentioned iron, which scholars interpret as authority and power. Justice cannot stand without these two things.'
Perception of Over-Patience
Sanusi noted that many Kano residents now perceive Governor Yusuf as overly patient, which has encouraged some individuals to act with impunity. He advised the governor to demonstrate stronger leadership: 'My advice to you as a brother is to rise to this challenge and let people know there is a government in Kano. If someone obeys the law, let them live in peace. If they refuse, deal with them.'
The first-class monarch warned the governor against extending respect to those who do not deserve it, emphasizing that the governor's success is tied to Kano's collective future.
Support from the Emirate Council
Emir Sanusi pledged the backing of the emirate council to Governor Yusuf's administration, underscoring the importance of unity in addressing the challenges facing the state. He remarked: 'Because of the disorder happening in Kano, people think they have a very patient governor, and everyone can do whatever they like.'
The advice comes amid ongoing tensions in Kano, including the suspension of the traditional Eid-el-Kabir durbar celebrations by Kano emirs following police directives and security concerns. The decision was made after parallel Hawan Sallah events raised fears of clashes between supporters of Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.

The governor warned that his silence should not be mistaken for cowardice, indicating he would speak out if pushed further.
