Lagos State Reaffirms Unwavering Dedication to Human Development and Industrial Harmony
The Head of Service for Lagos State, Mr. Bode Agoro, has strongly reiterated the state government's steadfast commitment to human capital development and industrial harmony. He emphasized that a motivated workforce serves as the fundamental cornerstone for sustainable governance and robust economic growth.
Shared Commitment to Accountability and Process Strengthening
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Lagos State Public Service Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) meeting, held at the State Treasury Office (STO) Resource Centre, Agoro highlighted that the reconvening of this council reflects a shared dedication to accountability and the reinforcement of established governmental processes.
In his keynote address, the Head of Service underscored the direct link between the well-being of public servants and the overall institutional effectiveness of the state. He reassured labour leaders that the administration under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remains firmly committed to promoting staff welfare, operating within the realistic limits of available state resources.
"A resilient public service is one that is anchored on collaboration, accountability, and a shared sense of purpose," Agoro stated. He urged all participants to engage in deliberations aimed at achieving practical and sustainable outcomes for the workforce.
Government and Unions: A Partnership, Not a Battleground
Echoing this collaborative sentiment, the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, described the relationship between the government and trade unions as a "partnership" rather than a "battleground." He noted that his ministry is proactively addressing the pressures stemming from the current economic climate through continuous dialogue and aggressive capacity-building initiatives.
The commissioner elaborated further, stating: "The 'Greater Lagos' we are building is only possible through the hands and minds of the dedicated men and women who serve in our Ministries, Departments, and Agencies."
Fostering a Conducive Work Environment
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Establishments and Training, Mrs. Olubusola Abidakun, who chaired the council meeting, expressed her delight at its reconvening, adding that it is always preferable to engage in dialogue—"jaw-jaw"—over conflict.
Abidakun reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to fostering a conducive and supportive work environment. She stated that the resolutions reached during this council meeting would further strengthen government-labour relations and support the effective implementation of the state's T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, a strategic development blueprint.
Addressing Workforce Challenges with Intentionality
While commending Governor Sanwo-Olu for his intentional efforts in sustaining industrial harmony, the Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, Michael Domingo, emphasized that the council meeting was not merely a formality. He highlighted it as a crucial opportunity to address the genuine challenges facing the workforce, noting that workers' welfare remains a key priority.
The event was attended by the Body of Permanent Secretaries and various Trade Union leaders. Government representatives commended the maturity demonstrated by the union leadership for consistently choosing the path of diplomacy and dialogue. This approach has ensured that Lagos State remains a beacon of stability and industrial peace within the Nigerian federation.
The JNC meeting serves as the primary structured framework for addressing workforce issues in Lagos State. It ensures that the voices of public servants are heard and considered, all while maintaining the state's fiscal sustainability and long-term economic planning.
