The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (FMHAPR) hosted a vibrant send-forth ceremony on Friday, December 6, 2024, to celebrate the distinguished career of Mrs. Rhoda Ishaku Iliya. The event marked her formal exit from the civil service following an impressive tenure spanning thirty-five years.
A Legacy of Leadership and Mentorship
The ceremony, held at the Ministry's headquarters in Abuja, was attended by directors, senior officials, staff members, media correspondents, and other well-wishers. They collectively honoured a woman widely recognized as a dedicated leader, a mentor, and an exemplary public servant.
In his address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, commended Mrs. Iliya's unwavering commitment and professionalism. He acknowledged that despite their relatively brief period of collaboration, her positive impact was unmistakable. "Her retirement signifies the conclusion of a significant chapter, yet her legacy of service, sacrifice, and discipline will endure within the Ministry's institutional memory," Olusanya stated.
He further encouraged her to maintain close ties with the Ministry, saying, "I urge you to stay connected. Keep fostering cordial relationships with your former colleagues and continue to offer guidance to those still in service. We extend our best wishes for your future endeavours."
Emotional Tributes from Colleagues
Mrs. Chinyere A. Ulasi, the Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations, set the tone with a warm welcome speech. She described the retiree as a dependable leader whose contributions profoundly shaped the department and the Ministry at large.
"Mrs. Iliya devoted 35 years of exemplary service to our nation. Today, we celebrate a remarkable career. She has led, uplifted, mentored, and inspired us. Her professionalism, wisdom, and dedication will be sorely missed," Ulasi expressed.
Several other speakers took turns sharing heartfelt testimonies, recounting instances of her guidance, discipline, and steadfast commitment to developing younger officers. Many highlighted her motherly demeanor and exceptional talent for nurturing professional growth within her unit.
Reflections from the Honouree
In her response, Mrs. Rhoda Iliya expressed profound gratitude to God, the Ministry, and all her colleagues over the decades. She reflected on a career journey that saw her collaborate with 37 different ministers and 42 permanent secretaries, an experience she described as both challenging and deeply fulfilling.
"My consistent advice to younger officers has been that the civil service is not merely about financial gain. Prioritize your duties, and your work will ultimately advocate for you. I am thankful for the privilege to serve, progressing from level 8 to level 17 without a blemish on my record," she shared.
Mrs. Iliya also thanked the Permanent Secretary for his supportive leadership and extended a heartfelt apology to anyone she might have inadvertently offended during her service, noting that leadership occasionally necessitates difficult decisions.
The ceremony's climax featured the symbolic formal handover of official documents from the retiring director to the incoming head of the Information and Public Relations Unit, ensuring a seamless transition of responsibilities.
The event concluded with prayers, goodwill messages, photo sessions, and a renewed pledge from staff to uphold the values of integrity and service that Mrs. Iliya championed throughout her impactful career.
