In a significant move to ease festive travel burdens, the Abia State Government has launched its annual free transport scheme, fulfilling a key promise made by Governor Alex Otti. The initiative provides complimentary bus rides for indigenes returning home for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Over 20 Buses Deployed for Interstate Travel
Governor Alex Otti confirmed the fulfilment of his commitment, with over 20 buses specifically allocated to convey Abia State citizens from Lagos back to their home state this December 2025. The exercise, which is a continuation of a similar programme from the previous year, officially kicked off in Lagos.
Representing the governor at the flag-off ceremony in Lagos, the State's Liaison Officer, Mrs Ugochi Essienette, emphasized that this action directly honoured Otti's promise. She recalled that the governor had also ordered the release of buses in 2024, which successfully transported almost 1,000 indigenes home.
Mrs Essienette provided further details on the logistics, stating that the first batch of beneficiaries departed on Saturday. The free interstate bus service is scheduled to run until December 23, 2025. She also clarified that the scheme is not exclusive to Lagos, extending to other major cities like Abuja.
Enhanced Internal Transport and Modernization Efforts
Beyond the interstate journey, the state government has also arranged free urban mass transit services for residents moving within Abia State throughout the Christmas and New Year period. This dual-layer approach aims to alleviate transport costs both for those coming from outside and those moving locally.
In a related development highlighting the administration's broader vision for transportation, Mrs Essienette pointed to the government's modernization drive. The first batch of 20 electric buses has already arrived in Abia, introduced as part of efforts to revolutionise and green the public transportation system.
Commendation from Stakeholders
The initiative has drawn praise from community leaders and observers. Obinna Orji, the Executive Director of Igbo Ndi-Oma Africa TV, who was present at the event, commended Governor Otti's actions. He stated that "Otti is delivering democracy dividends to the joy of all Abians. He has elevated governance in the state."
This annual transport intervention is increasingly seen as a tangible demonstration of the state government's commitment to the welfare of its people, particularly during the expensive festive season when travel demand and costs peak.
