Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has unveiled an ambitious economic plan anchored on a massive expansion of transport infrastructure, declaring it the cornerstone for stimulating growth across all sectors.
Budget Blueprint for a Transport Revolution
Presenting a historic budget proposal of N1.62 trillion for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly on Tuesday, Governor Mbah stated that his administration would pay deliberate and focused attention to transforming mobility. He emphasized that efficient transport is non-negotiable for a thriving economy.
"Transport is the lifeblood of commerce. Without efficient mobility, no economy can thrive," the governor asserted, outlining the strategic vision behind the budget.
Key Infrastructure Projects Unveiled
The governor announced concrete projects to actualize this vision. A major highlight is the construction of five new transport terminals across the state in 2026. The identified locations for these terminals are Emene, Udi, Awgu, 4-Corners, and Obollo Afor.
To further enhance urban mobility, the government has made provisions for the procurement of 2,000 sedans to boost the City Taxi scheme. In the aviation sector, the state-owned Enugu Air will be significantly boosted with an additional 14 aircraft, expanding its fleet to 20 planes. Governor Mbah described the airline as a critical economic enabler and a strategic platform for positioning Enugu as a premier regional hub.
Beyond Transport: Housing and Holistic Development
While transport takes center stage, the 2026 budget also caters to other vital sectors. Governor Mbah revealed plans to develop approximately 15,000 mass housing units in the coming year. This initiative is designed as the first phase of a broader plan to deliver 30,000 housing units within his administration's first term, addressing shelter needs and stimulating the construction industry.
The overarching goal, as presented by the governor, is to use strategic investments in transport as a catalyst, unlocking potential in commerce, real estate, and overall socio-economic development, thereby contributing to the comprehensive growth of Enugu State.
