Fintiri Orders Judicial Panel for Lamurde Killings

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has mandated the creation of a judicial panel of inquiry to look into the tragic shooting incident of December 8 in Lamurde Local Government Area. The violence resulted in the deaths of ten women and an 11-year-old girl.

Governor's Visit and Assurance of Justice

Governor Fintiri announced the decision during a visit to Lamurde and five impacted communities within Suwa District. He assured residents that the panel would carry out an open, fair, and thorough investigation. The primary goal is to uncover the full circumstances of the event and ensure justice is served for the victims.

He described the killing of the women during a protest as "most unfortunate," emphasizing that the victims were innocent and defenseless. The governor appealed for calm, stressing the state government's commitment to due process and accountability.

Composition and Mandate of the Judicial Panel

The judicial panel will be chaired by a retired High Court judge. Its mandate extends beyond the immediate triggers of the crisis to also examine the remote causes. The panel is expected to provide recommendations aimed at fostering reconciliation and building sustainable peace in the area.

Governor Fintiri also revealed that the Adamawa State Peace Commission is actively involved, engaging with youths, elders, clergy, and community leaders from the affected zones to de-escalate tensions and promote peaceful resolution.

Government Support and Security Measures

During his assessment tour, Governor Fintiri inspected damaged areas and pledged increased security presence to protect lives and property. He assured the families of the victims of government support, which will include assistance for education and livelihoods.

Furthermore, he disclosed that emergency agencies, including the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), have been mobilized to provide relief materials and support for any displaced persons. He asserted that security challenges would not prevent the government from delivering essential humanitarian aid.

Community Leaders Appeal for Lasting Peace

Speaking on behalf of the affected communities, the District Head of Lamurde, Pwahomakai Joseph, alongside Napwamwa Istifanus, recounted how the crisis unfolded. They appealed to the state government to intervene decisively to achieve lasting peace between the Bachama and Chobo communities.

Governor Fintiri reiterated that peace is the only viable path forward. He expressed confidence that calm would be restored as residents embrace reconciliation, and promised continued collaboration with all stakeholders, including religious and community leaders, to foster dialogue, understanding, and mutual trust.

With the promise of a transparent investigation, enhanced security, and sustained dialogue, the people of Lamurde are hopeful that this path will lead to enduring justice and peace.
