Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has personally addressed and dismissed circulating reports claiming his official convoy was attacked by armed assailants. The clarification comes after an incident involving state officials on the morning of Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025.
Advance Team Ambushed Near Owerri Airport
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku, the government confirmed an attack but clarified the target. According to the statement, an advance team of three officials from the Governor's office was ambushed by unidentified gunmen.
The incident occurred between Umuowa and Ihitte junction in Imo State, along the route to Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri. The officials were on official duty heading to the airport when the attack took place.
Governor's Convoy Was Not Involved
Mr. Njoku was emphatic in correcting the narrative, stressing that Governor Alex Otti and his security convoy were not involved in the incident. He described earlier reports linking the attack directly to the governor's motorcade as inaccurate and misleading.
The statement provided a crucial reassurance to the public, confirming that no lives were lost during the unfortunate ambush. The focus remains on the safety of the government staff who were directly affected.
Investigation Launched, Security To Be Strengthened
In response to the attack, authorities have commenced investigations to identify and apprehend the assailants. The state government condemned the act of violence in strong terms.
The statement further assured citizens and public servants that security measures are being reviewed and strengthened to better protect officials on legitimate government assignments. This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in some parts of the region, even for government personnel.
