Gov Yusuf to Immortalise Late Kano Lawmakers Amid Youth Warning to Deputy
Kano Gov to Honour Late Lawmakers, Youth Caution Deputy

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has unveiled plans to immortalise two members of the state's House of Assembly who died while actively serving their constituencies.

Governor's Tribute to Legislative Pillars

The announcement was made public on Thursday, January 1, 2026, through a statement issued by the Governor's spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. The move coincides with the formal presentation of the 2026 budget estimate document to the Governor for his assent by the Speaker, Ismail Jibril Falgore.

Governor Yusuf extended his heartfelt condolences to the leadership of the House, the families of the departed lawmakers, and the entire populace of Kano State. The late legislators are Aminu Sa'adu Ungogo of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who represented Ungogo constituency and chaired the powerful House Committee on Appropriation, and Sarki Aliyu Daneji (NNPP-Municipal), the Chairman of the House Committee on Hajj.

The Governor highlighted that Sa'adu's final significant act for the state was his relentless work in finalising the 2026 budget, ensuring it was ready for legislative passage. "The dedication and commitment these two legislators demonstrated towards the development of Kano State cannot be overstated," Governor Yusuf stated.

He reaffirmed his administration's pledge to support the bereaved families and to preserve the legislative legacies of the late lawmakers. This commitment will be honoured through the effective implementation of the 2026 budget they helped shape.

Youth Group Sounds Alarm on Political Tension

In a related development, a civil society organisation named the Kano Youth Mobilisation for Change has expressed serious concerns over escalating political friction between Governor Yusuf and his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

In a statement released on the same day and signed by its Chairman, Musa Samaila Tofa, the group accused the Deputy Governor of engaging in actions that could undermine the state's leadership and jeopardise Kano's political stability.

The body asserted that recent statements and actions linked to Deputy Governor Gwarzo are widely seen as a betrayal of the trust placed in him by both Governor Yusuf and the Kano electorate who voted the administration into power.

A Call for Loyalty and Unity

"In Kano's political environment, loyalty remains a critical pillar of effective governance," Tofa noted. He stressed that any perceived disloyalty transcends personal disagreements and poses a direct threat to the collective aspirations of the state.

The youth coalition warned that alleged attempts by the deputy governor to sabotage the governor's development vision—particularly in critical sectors like infrastructure, education, and healthcare—could destabilise governance and fracture unity within the ruling NNPP.

The group's statement further interpreted Gwarzo's controversial remarks as a direct challenge to Governor Yusuf's authority and the mandate freely given to him by the people. They described such manoeuvres as a profound disservice to the citizens of Kano.

This unfolding situation presents a dual narrative for Kano State: one of honouring past service and another of navigating present political challenges that could shape the administration's future trajectory.
