Kano Govt Reacts to UK Travel Advisory, Assures Foreign Nationals Safety
Kano government responds to UK travel warning

The Kano state government has responded to the United Kingdom's travel advisory warning British citizens against visiting several northern states, including Kano. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration has assured all foreign nationals of their safety while highlighting ongoing security measures.

UK Travel Advisory Details

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) recently issued updated guidance recommending against all but essential travel to multiple northern Nigerian states. The affected areas include Kano, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, and parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The British government cited concerns about rising violent crime and potential protest flashpoints as primary reasons for the updated travel guidance. The advisory was published in November 2025 as part of routine security assessments for British citizens traveling abroad.

Kano Government's Official Response

Mustapha Muhammad, the chief press secretary to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, described the UK advisory as routine and emphasized that it should not cause public alarm. The state government maintains that foreign nationals in Kano are guaranteed their safety under the current administration.

The governor's office stated that proactive security measures are being implemented across the state, with particular focus on border areas where security threats might emerge. Muhammad explained that the UK government may not be fully aware of all the security strategies already being executed at the local level.

Recent Security Operations in Kano

Recent military operations demonstrate the ongoing efforts to combat insecurity in the region. On November 1, 2025, troops of the Nigerian Army engaged in a gun battle with bandits in the Ungwan Tudu area of Goron Dutse axis, Shanono local government area.

According to Babatunde Zubairu, assistant director of public relations at 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, 19 bandits were neutralized during the operation. Unfortunately, the confrontation also resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and one vigilante member.

The security forces were alerted to the movement of bandits in the area and subsequently conducted a raid that led to the intense firefight. This incident highlights both the ongoing security challenges and the determined response from security agencies.

Broader Security Context

Kano state, like several other northern Nigerian states, has experienced its share of security challenges in recent times. The state government emphasizes that security forces are strategically deployed, especially in border areas where bandits might attempt to cross from neighboring states like Katsina.

Former Senator Shehu Sani from Kaduna state has previously commented on Nigeria's security situation, pointing to corruption as a significant factor in the persistence of banditry and terrorism. He noted that terrorists appear more hesitant to attack targets in neighboring countries compared to Nigeria.

The Kano state government continues to work closely with military and security agencies to maintain safety and stability throughout the state, assuring both residents and international visitors of their commitment to security.
