Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has officially introduced his son, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, as the deputy governorship candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in preparation for the 2027 general elections in Kano State.
Announcement and Confirmation
The revelation was made public on Monday through Habibu Mohammad, the spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement. Mustapha Kwankwaso, who previously held the position of Kano State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, will be paired with Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, a longtime ally of Kwankwaso, on the party's joint ticket.
Political Background
Mustapha had earlier served in the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf before stepping down along with other cabinet members following political shifts triggered by the governor's move to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Gwarzo, who also served as deputy governor under Yusuf, resigned amid rising political tensions in the state. Although he cited personal reasons for his departure, his time in office was marked by allegations of financial misconduct raised by the State House of Assembly.
Strategic Repositioning
The Kwankwasiyya Movement, under Senator Kwankwaso's leadership, asserts that it is reorganizing to regain political dominance in Kano State from the APC, especially after recent defections and changing alliances within the state's political scene. The group emphasizes its commitment to grassroots mobilization and strengthening its organizational framework ahead of the 2027 elections.
