Kwankwaso unveils son as NDC Deputy Governorship candidate

Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso has emerged as the governorship running mate under the new Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State ahead of the 2027 poll. The confirmation came from Habibu Mohammad, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, on Monday.

Kwankwaso Nominates Son as Running Mate

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is nominating all candidates vying for elective positions under the NDC, has chosen his own son as running mate. Mustapha, the eldest son of the former governor, was unveiled on Monday to run alongside Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, another close associate of Kwankwaso in next year’s general election.

Background of Mustapha Kwankwaso

Mustapha Kwankwaso previously served as Commissioner for Youths and Sports under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's cabinet. He resigned, along with three other commissioners, from the present administration following the political realignment that led the governor to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gwarzo's Resignation

Like Mustapha Kwankwaso, Gwarzo also resigned his position as Deputy Governor to Governor Yusuf after mounting pressure of impeachment by the state house of assembly. Although Gwarzo insisted his resignation was prompted by personal reasons, he has yet to disprove the allegation of financial impropriety leveled against him by the state assembly.

Kwankwasiyya Movement's Ambition

The Kwankwasiyya Movement, under the leadership of former Governor Kwankwaso, has vowed to take over power from the ruling APC following the defection of Yusuf to the APC.
