Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, is set to lead Nigeria's representation at the maiden Canada-Africa Summit on digital rails and inclusive growth, scheduled to hold in Toronto from 10 to 15 August 2026. The invitation, extended by the Presidency, underscores the governor's role as a key participant in strengthening Nigeria's diplomatic and economic standing at the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Economic Conference (NDIEC).
Nigeria's Delegation to the Summit
According to a statement issued on Sunday by Sulaiman Bala Idris, spokesperson to the Zamfara State Governor, the Nigerian delegation will also include the President's Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; Governors Charles Soludo of Anambra State, Babagana Zulum of Borno, Uba Sani of Kaduna, and Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State. Other officials include Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole; and Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, among others.
Strategic Economic Mission
The summit will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's goals through the National Energy Transition Plan, aiming to position Nigeria as a key partner in Africa-Canada economic cooperation. The Zamfara State Government views NIDEC as more than just a diplomatic event; it is a strategic economic mission to attract investment, technology transfer, development funding, and technical partnerships to drive the State's economic transformation.
Positioning Zamfara as an Investment Hub
Governor Lawal's involvement in the Canada-Africa Investment Summit will help position Zamfara State as Nigeria's emerging hub for agribusiness, strategic minerals development, human capital growth, and digital innovation. The summit is expected to foster strategic partnerships between governments, investors, multinational companies, development finance institutions, foundations, and partners, exploring investment opportunities across various sectors.
Broader Impact on Nigeria's Economy
The participation of Nigerian officials at this global platform is anticipated to enhance the country's attractiveness to Canadian and international investors, potentially leading to increased foreign direct investment and technological collaborations. The summit aligns with the federal government's broader economic diversification agenda, emphasizing non-oil sectors such as agriculture, mining, and digital economy.
