DSS Arrests Two Suspected Arms Couriers, Recovers RPGs in Gombe Operation
Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have successfully arrested two suspected arms couriers and seized a significant cache of weapons, including two Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) warheads and an RPG launcher, in Gombe State. This operation, which targeted items linked to bandit networks, was disclosed by a trusted security source to the Nation on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
The suspects, identified as Muhammed Alhaji Mohammed, aged 55, and Sani Gesha, aged 47, were intercepted at Mararaban Tula in the Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State. They were traveling in a grey Toyota Corolla with the registration number Taraba JAL475YQ at the time of their arrest. The operation was the result of covert surveillance conducted on a bandit cell led by a notorious figure involved in arms trafficking across multiple states, including Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, and Adamawa.
According to the source, DSS operatives monitored the trafficking syndicate for over three weeks before launching a professionally executed operation. This led to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of a huge cache of arms and ammunition. During the subsequent investigation, the suspects confessed that the consignment was intended for delivery to Ardo Hamma Ari, a resident of Kukawa Village in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
Implications for Security
This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat arms trafficking and banditry in the region. The recovery of RPGs and other weapons underscores the serious threat posed by such networks to public safety and stability. The DSS's surveillance and operational tactics demonstrate a proactive approach to disrupting criminal activities and preventing the flow of illegal arms.
The successful operation in Gombe State serves as a reminder of the importance of intelligence gathering and coordinated efforts in tackling security challenges. It also emphasizes the need for continued vigilance and collaboration among security forces to address the root causes of banditry and arms trafficking in Nigeria.
