Emir Escapes Bandit Attack; Igboho Seeks FG Approval

Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, announced yesterday that he is still awaiting Federal Government approval to launch his security initiative, the Iru Ekun Security Network. He stated that the outfit aims to eliminate criminal elements from forests in the South-West region.

Igboho expressed his readiness to comply with an Executive Order recently issued by the Oyo State government under Governor Seyi Makinde, which regulates private security firms in the state. In a statement, he reiterated that all necessary documents and procedural requirements for the approval had been submitted to the Federal Government. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to strengthening the security architecture in the South-West and other parts of the country.

In a separate incident, suspected armed bandits launched a coordinated midnight attack on Yashikira Community in Baruten Local Council of Kwara State. They set the palace ablaze and abducted 10 people, including wives and children of the traditional ruler, Umar Seriki. The Emir of Yashikira managed to escape unharmed. The bandits also attempted to storm the Divisional Police Station but were repelled.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, describing the assault as cowardly and audacious. Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to urgently rescue the abducted residents.

Meanwhile, Governor Makinde held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who visited to sympathize with the government and people of the state over the recent abduction of teachers and pupils in Yawota and Esiele communities of Oriire Local Government Area. The delegation included members of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) led by Senator Adolphus Wabara and the party's Interim National Working Committee (INWC) led by Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN). The meeting took place at the Governor's Office in Ibadan.

Turaki told journalists after the meeting that the delegation came to identify with the state government and encourage residents amid the security challenges. He commended Makinde for his efforts and resources deployed to safeguard lives and property despite growing security threats across the country. Turaki condemned the bandit activities and attacks on innocent citizens, describing the Oriire incident as unfortunate and deeply disturbing.
