Ondo Communities Erupt in Protest Over Insecurity, Question Security Votes
Residents of Imafon, Igushin, and Ilado communities in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State staged a massive protest on Saturday, expressing outrage over a recent wave of violent attacks that have resulted in at least two deaths and multiple injuries. The demonstrators barricaded the busy Shoprite intersection, located just meters from the Governor's Office, to voice their dismay at the brutal incidents that have plunged their communities into mourning.
Recent Attacks Spark Outrage
On Thursday, suspected bandits stormed the Igushin community in an attempt to kidnap residents. During the attack, gunmen shot and killed the owner of a local poultry farm and her daughter. Less than twenty-four hours later, armed assailants struck the Ilado community, abducting a popular youth leader. The victim was macheted and shot while attempting to escape from his captors, highlighting the escalating violence in the area.
Youth Leader Demands Accountability
A youth leader from one of the affected communities, who identified himself as Kunle, lamented that gunmen have been operating unchecked across Ondo State, particularly in the Akure environs, which serves as the state capital. He sharply questioned how the state's security vote is being expended, emphasizing that its impact has not been felt given the rising spate of insecurity.
"We are protesting due to the incessant killings and kidnappings day in and day out at Imafon, Igushin, and Ilado. A mother and daughter were killed two days ago, and another guy was brutally macheted yesterday. We want government to rise up to its duties. We have not seen the impact of the monthly security votes in the state. We are tired of burying our people every week while those paid to protect us do nothing. These gunmen move freely in the state capital, and yet our leaders remain silent. Where exactly is the security vote going? We see no presence of security, no patrols, no results," he stated.
Growing Frustration and Warnings
The youth leader further warned that residents would not relent until the government takes concrete action to secure their lives and property. This demonstration is the latest in a series of protests that have erupted across various communities in Ondo State over the past few weeks, fueled by incessant abductions and killings. Notably, a traditional ruler has been among the victims, underscoring the widespread nature of the security crisis.
The protesters' actions reflect deep-seated frustration with perceived governmental inaction and a demand for transparency regarding the allocation and use of security funds. As tensions mount, the call for effective security measures and accountability grows louder among Ondo State residents.
