Former Senator Shehu Sani has delivered a powerful message to political leaders in Northern Nigeria, demanding they address the region's severe and persistent insecurity with complete honesty and a long-term vision.
A Call for Honest Leadership
Speaking on Tuesday in Kaduna, the former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central stated that the North has been grappling with unrelenting security challenges for over 15 years. He attributed this prolonged crisis to deep-seated problems in society, the economy, and governance.
Sani was emphatic that leaders must move beyond superficial measures and tackle the foundational issues fueling violence. He specifically identified poverty, widespread underdevelopment, and illiteracy as the core problems that need urgent attention.
The Path to Sustainable Security
The senator stressed that since the affected communities are integral to the region, the answers must originate from within. "The solutions must come from within," he asserted, dismissing the idea that external forces could fix the problem. He strongly emphasized that "Foreign powers cannot resolve our security challenges. Our focus must be on strengthening our armed forces and uniting as citizens."
He also pointed out the grim reality of repeated attacks on soft targets. Schools, worship centers, and entire communities across the North have consistently been targeted by criminal gangs and extremist networks. Sani noted that the situation is further complicated by the cross-border nature of some of these militant groups.
Civil Society's Role and Future Warnings
Sani encouraged civil society organizations to remain vocal and engaged on security issues. However, he cautioned them to stay focused on the core matters and avoid being dragged into partisan political fights.
While acknowledging the security challenges still present in Kaduna State, he commended Governor Uba Sani for initiatives aimed at improving safety and reducing religious tensions in volatile areas like Birnin Gwari. He also noted a degree of progress in tackling national security under the current federal administration.
Looking ahead, the former senator issued a stark warning. He cautioned that security risks could significantly escalate as the 2027 elections approach if proactive and preventative measures are not prioritized immediately. He concluded that "The future of the North depends on courage, honesty and unity."
Earlier at the event, which was a courtesy visit by the Open Heart Foundation and the Women Empowerment Centre, representatives expressed deep concern about the recurring kidnappings of schoolchildren. They joined the call for authorities to take decisive action to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
