Terrorists Overrun Army Checkpoint in Kwara, Leaving Trail of Death and Desolation
Residents of the Dina community in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State have been forced to abandon their homes following a brutal attack by suspected terrorists that resulted in the deaths of three soldiers and six civilians. The incident, which occurred on April 2, 2026, has plunged the area into chaos and fear, with locals describing a scene of overwhelming violence and a complete breakdown of security.
Residents Recount Horror as Assailants Storm Community
According to eyewitness accounts gathered from the scene, the attackers, believed to be heavily armed and operating in large numbers, launched a coordinated assault on military checkpoints in the Dina community. A resident identified as Illiasu detailed the terrifying events, stating that the soldiers were outnumbered and overpowered during the initial confrontation. "They came in large numbers with weapons we have never seen before. The soldiers tried their best, but they were outnumbered. After attacking the checkpoint, they started shooting everywhere. People were running into the bush for safety," he recounted.
The aftermath of the attack has left the once-bustling community deserted, with houses abandoned and residents fleeing for their lives. Illiasu added, "As I speak to you, there is nobody in Dina again. We have all run away. Houses have been abandoned. We are scared they may return because there is no security presence anymore." The terrorists further demonstrated their organization by setting a Nigerian Army vehicle ablaze after reportedly removing a mounted weapon from it, as confirmed by a local vigilante member who requested anonymity.
Governor Responds with Compensation and Support
In response to the tragedy, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited injured soldiers receiving treatment at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. During the visit, the governor commended the security forces for their sacrifice and pledged ongoing support for their operations. His aide, Ibraheem Abdullateef, announced that the governor approved N60 million for the families of the three fallen soldiers, along with N5 million each for injured personnel, with assurances that their medical care would be fully covered.
Residents Demand Urgent Security Reinforcements
Despite the governor's efforts, residents are calling for immediate reinforcement of security in the area to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among displaced families. The incident has heightened fears in neighbouring communities, with many reportedly relocating to safer areas. The attack underscores the persistent security challenges facing the region, as locals grapple with the trauma and loss inflicted by the assailants.
This devastating event highlights the urgent need for enhanced security measures and community support in Kwara State, as authorities work to address the escalating threats and protect vulnerable populations.
