A fresh wave of attacks in Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State has resulted in the death of a 52-year-old man and the destruction of farmlands, prompting strong condemnation from the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM).
Details of the Attack
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Dyan community, Rim Village, Riyom Local Council, where Joshua Bulus was killed by suspected armed Fulani herders grazing cattle near the community. According to a statement issued by BYM National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the attackers fled immediately after the incident.
Destruction of Farmlands
In addition to the killing, the association raised alarm over the destruction of cabbage and carrot farms covering approximately five hectares in Gassa community, Ropp District, Barkin Ladi Local Council. The attacks come just two days after eight people were killed and seven others injured in Gwom-Ajang village, Foron District, despite recent assurances from the Plateau State Governor following visits to affected communities.
Decades of Insecurity
BYM lamented that for over two decades, armed attackers have continued to operate across Plateau communities, leaving residents exposed to killings, intimidation, farm destruction, and harassment along rural roads. Recent incidents include the alleged sexual harassment of women returning from farms in Ganawuri District, an attack on Mr. Bot Yakubu in Gassa, and the rustling of livestock belonging to Mr. Iliya Dongo in Tahoss.
Call for Action
The association stated, "Repeated assurances by government authorities have yet to produce meaningful results, as communities continue to experience fear, displacement and destruction of livelihoods." BYM called on security agencies and all levels of government to move beyond routine condemnations and demonstrate genuine commitment to ending the cycle of violence and protecting vulnerable communities. The group also urged residents to remain vigilant and law-abiding while supporting lawful efforts to restore peace and security across the state.
