The Edo State Special Security Squad has apprehended 12 suspected cultists and sealed off two apartments allegedly used for cult initiation activities, following the killing of a student near the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
Coordinated Raids Across Benin City
The operations, led by the Chief Security Officer and Principal Security Officer to Governor Monday Okpebholo, targeted several hotspots including Ekosodin, Isihor, Old Road off S&T Barracks, Airport Road, 19th Street Ugbowo, Ogba-Evbuodia, and Evbuomore Quarters.
Spokesperson Confirms Arrests
Noah Idemudia, spokesperson for the squad, addressed journalists on Tuesday, confirming the arrests and accusing some community leaders of allegedly aiding violent crimes. He stated, "Twelve suspected cultists have been arrested in connection with the killing of a young man on Sunday. Two apartments allegedly used for cult initiations have also been sealed during coordinated raids across several hotspots in Benin City."
Idemudia further revealed that intelligence reports suggest some Okaigheles (community leaders) are allegedly harboring criminals and sourcing sophisticated weapons used in deadly attacks. He warned community leaders to maintain peace, emphasizing that anyone found with unlicensed weapons would be held accountable.
Governor's Warning
The governor has issued a stern warning to Okaigheles to ensure peace in their communities and avoid possessing unlicensed weapons, as they will be treated as criminals. Idemudia clarified that the 12 arrested suspects are not directly linked to the UNIBEN gate killing but were identified as cult members due to incriminating items and symbols found on them.
Handover and Investigations
The suspects have been transferred to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Command, for profiling and further investigation. Regarding the sealed properties, one apartment at Ogba-Evbuodia was allegedly used for cult initiation, with resistance encountered during the arrest. Another apartment at Evbuomore Quarters contained shrines and fetish items suspected for initiation rituals. The owners of both properties have been invited for questioning.
Idemudia reiterated the governor's stance: "The governor has warned those sponsoring cultism and violent killings in the state to desist immediately. Anyone found aiding criminality in Edo State will face the full weight of the law."
