The Kwara State Police Command has made a significant arrest following a disturbing case of alleged religiously motivated arson in Ilorin. Three suspects are now in custody for the crime of setting fire to the residence of an elderly traditional worshipper.
The Incident and Immediate Aftermath
The attack occurred on January 1, 2026, at approximately 7:00 pm in the Isale Koko Area of Ilorin. The victim, identified as Mrs. T. A. Olorisha, was not at home when her property was completely razed, a fact that fortunately prevented any loss of life. She reported the incident the following day, January 2, at the C Division police station in Oja Oba.
According to the police, the complainant had a history with the suspects. Mrs. Olorisha alleged she received threats in November 2025 from individuals who objected to her practice of traditional religion. These threats allegedly materialized into the devastating fire that destroyed her home at the start of the new year.
Suspects Identified and Arrested
The police spokesperson for the command, DSP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, named the three suspects now aiding the investigation. They are Alhaji Salihu Saka (63), Alhaji Abubakar Salihu (58), and Alhaji Yekini Olohuntele (67). All were taken into custody in connection with the crime.
Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed that while the suspects are cooperating, the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. The total value of the destroyed property has not yet been ascertained. She also assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend any other individuals who may have been involved in the act.
Police Reaffirm Commitment to Rights and Coexistence
In a strong statement, the Kwara State Police Command condemned the attack and reiterated its core mandate. The force emphasized that there should be no interference with the right to religion and peaceful coexistence anywhere in Nigeria.
"The Kwara State Police Command reiterates its commitment to protecting lives, property, and the fundamental rights of all residents, regardless of religious or cultural beliefs," stated DSP Ejire-Adeyemi. She pleaded with members of the public to remain calm and to provide any useful information that could further aid the ongoing investigation.
This case has drawn attention following a viral online video where the elderly victim detailed her ordeal, highlighting ongoing tensions and the urgent need for protection of all faiths and beliefs within communities.
