At least 31 people have lost their lives and 33 others sustained injuries after a passenger bus crashed and plunged into a ravine in Ethiopia's northern Amhara region. The tragic incident occurred while the vehicle was traveling from Dessie to Addis Ababa, specifically in an area leading to Kombolcha, according to local authorities.
Details of the Crash
Commander Getachew Muhiye confirmed the incident, stating that the crash resulted in multiple fatalities, including the bus driver. Initial reports indicated 28 deaths, but after further assessments, the toll rose to 31. The injured victims suffered varying degrees of injuries and are receiving medical attention.
“The vehicle fell off a cliff and 31 people died, including the driver, with 33 people suffering serious and minor injuries,” Muhiye said, as per a statement from the regional government’s communication bureau.
Rescue and Investigation
Rescue operations have been underway, with authorities working to assist the injured and recover the deceased. The cause of the accident is under investigation, as officials seek to determine why the bus lost control and fell into the ravine.
