500+ Inmates Await Trial in Zamfara – NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concern over the plight of no fewer than 500 inmates currently held in Zamfara State Correctional Centres without trial. The commission has called on judicial authorities to expedite legal processes to ensure justice is served.

NHRC State Coordinator Speaks on Prolonged Detentions

Speaking at the launch of the 2026 implementation plan for the National Action Plan on Human Rights, the State Coordinator of the NHRC, Abdullahi Abubakar, highlighted the issue of prolonged detentions. He emphasized that the 1999 Nigerian Constitution guarantees the rights of all citizens without discrimination. Abubakar stressed the need for public enlightenment campaigns and education to inform citizens about their legal rights and the rights of others.

Impact of Banditry on Human Rights

According to Abubakar, persistent banditry activities in Zamfara have severely worsened the local humanitarian situation, leading to an increase in human rights abuses, including rape and various forms of gender-based violence. The security challenges have exacerbated the already difficult conditions for inmates and the general population.

Ex-Convict Alleges Harsh Conditions in Correctional Facilities

A recently freed ex-convict disclosed to journalists the hardships endured by inmates inside the cells. He alleged that detainees in Zamfara correctional facilities are subjected to highly unhygienic living conditions, poor feeding, inadequate medication, and a severe lack of clothing and other basic human amenities. However, he noted that the Gusau facility where he served his time had a sufficient water supply and did not face such problems.

At the time of filing this report, all attempts to contact the spokesman of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Gusau for an official comment on these allegations proved unsuccessful.
