Activist Israel Joe calls for justice after minor nearly dies from drugged abortion attempt
Human rights activist Israel Joe has called on the Delta State Police Command to rearrest a 22-year-old man identified as Mine, who allegedly impregnated a 16-year-old girl and then gave her a drugged drink to induce an abortion without her knowledge. The incident nearly cost the teenager her life.
In a video shared by Joe, the pregnant minor is seen speaking from her hospital bed, recounting how her boyfriend deceived her into consuming a drink that caused her to lose consciousness. She was later found on the road by good Samaritans who rushed her to a hospital, where she was revived and stabilized.
Suspect initially arrested but released with father's intervention
According to Israel Joe, the suspect was initially arrested by local youths and handed over to the police at the Jesse Division. However, the man's father allegedly brought a lawyer and a chief magistrate to secure his release, prompting the girl's father to seek help from human rights activists.
Joe stated, "The said boy was arrested by the youths and handed over to the police. It was alleged that the father of the boy brought a lawyer and a chief Magistrate to get him out immediately."
Activist demands rearrest and full prosecution
In a statement addressed to the DPO of Jesse, Delta State Command, Israel Joe urged authorities to rearrest the suspect and ensure he faces the full weight of the law. He condemned the act of drugging the minor and attempting to terminate the pregnancy without her consent.
Joe wrote, "This said boy, fully aware that he has impregnated his 16 years old girlfriend, chose to drug her drink in order to get rid of the pregnancy. The moment he deceived the girl to an undisclosed location and drugged this girl, she passed out only to be seen on the road."
He added that the pregnancy was not affected by the drug, and the girl is now stable enough to tell her story. Joe emphasized that sleeping with an underage girl should be discouraged and that the police must deliver justice irrespective of social status.
Police urged to act without delay
The activist called on the Delta State Command to immediately rearrest Mine and prosecute him for statutory rape, attempted abortion, and endangering the life of a minor. The case has sparked outrage online, with many calling for swift justice.
