Led by the President General of the Ogboji Town Union, Hon. Ndubuisi Nwaedozie, protesters gathered on Sunday, March 29, to appeal to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and the state police command. They emphasized the need to unravel the circumstances behind Okafor's death, describing him as a promising individual whose life was cut short unjustly. The community highlighted their law-abiding nature, opting for peaceful protest rather than violent retaliation, despite deep grief over the loss.
Police Response and Investigation Details
In response, ACP Olusegun Kayode addressed the protesters, commending their peaceful conduct and urging against vigilante actions. He confirmed that all suspects linked to the killing have been arrested, with the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a comprehensive probe. This move aims to ensure a detailed examination of the allegations, including claims that Okafor was accused of theft before the fatal incident.
Allegations of Workplace Violence and Threats
According to community members and the victim's kinsman, Sunday Eguejiofor, Okafor faced threats prior to his death. Eguejiofor alleged that his brother was targeted due to loyalty to the factory owner, Mr. Anthony, and had reported threats from the owner's wife. He claimed Okafor was blindfolded, locked in a room for three days, and then thrown from the building, leaving behind no immediate family. The protest saw support from local leaders, including Onowu Ogboji and Councillor Ikechukwu Nwokoye, all demanding swift justice.
