The Nigerian Army has intercepted a truck laden with illicit drugs along the Lagos-Calabar coastal road, marking a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the region. The operation, conducted by troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of a substantial quantity of narcotics.
Details of the Interception
According to a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the interception occurred during a routine patrol along the coastal road. The troops flagged down the truck for a routine check, during which they discovered several bags containing substances suspected to be cannabis sativa and other illicit drugs. The total weight of the seized drugs is estimated to be over 500 kilograms.
The suspects, whose identities have not been disclosed pending investigation, were immediately taken into custody. They are currently being held at the 6 Division headquarters for further interrogation. The truck and the drugs have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.
Impact on Drug Trafficking
This interception is part of the Nigerian Army's ongoing efforts to curb the illegal drug trade, which has been linked to various security challenges in the country. The Lagos-Calabar coastal road is known to be a major route for drug traffickers, who exploit the remote stretches of the highway to transport narcotics. The successful operation has disrupted the supply chain of these drugs, potentially preventing them from reaching communities and fueling addiction and crime.
Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma emphasized the army's commitment to eradicating drug trafficking. He stated, "The Nigerian Army remains resolute in its fight against all forms of criminality, including drug trafficking. We will continue to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure that those involved in this illicit trade are brought to justice."
Broader Security Context
The interception comes amid heightened security measures along major highways and coastal roads in Nigeria. The military has intensified patrols and checkpoints to combat not only drug trafficking but also banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of organized crime. The 6 Division, which covers the South-South region, has been particularly active in these operations.
Local residents have expressed support for the army's actions, noting that drug-related crimes have been a growing concern in the area. One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, "We are happy with the army's efforts. Drug abuse has destroyed many young lives in our community, and we hope this will send a strong message to traffickers."
The seized drugs are expected to be destroyed after the completion of the investigation. The two suspects will be charged in court once the NDLEA concludes its inquiry. The Nigerian Army has urged members of the public to provide information that could lead to the arrest of other drug traffickers, promising to protect the identities of informants.
