The chairperson of Jaba Local Government Area in Kaduna State, Larai Sylvia Ishaku, has disclosed details of her condolence visit to the family of late Nurse Mary Habila, whose death at the residence of Minister of Works David Umahi has sparked national outrage.
Mary, a staff member of the David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital in Ebonyi, died on June 27, 2026, at the minister's residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State. Her sudden death has prompted widespread calls for an independent investigation.
Father's Account of Final Moments
During the visit on July 16, 2026, Mary's father, Baba Habila, told Ishaku that his daughter had informed her fiancé in a telephone conversation that she experienced a nosebleed the night before her death. He recounted that on the morning of June 27, when Mary did not appear for breakfast, her colleagues grew concerned. After repeated unsuccessful attempts to reach her, they forced open her door and found her body lifeless on the floor.
Ishaku stated: “According to the family of Late Mary Habila, she was a staff member of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Ebonyi State, and was widely described as a promising, dedicated, and responsible young nurse whose life was cut short at a time when she had a bright future ahead.”
Decision Against Autopsy
Baba Habila explained that his decision not to request an autopsy stems from his personal conviction that no medical examination can bring his daughter back to life. He expressed no resentment toward the minister or his family, stating confidence that Mary lived a responsible and honourable life that never caused him concern.
Ishaku quoted the father: “Baba Habila said his decision not to request an autopsy is based on his personal conviction that no medical examination can bring his daughter back to life.”
Appeal for Public Restraint and Release of Remains
The father appealed to the public to allow his daughter to rest in peace and avoid unnecessary speculation surrounding her death. He passionately urged relevant security authorities in Ebonyi State to release Mary's remains to the family so she can receive a dignified burial in accordance with their customs and traditions.
Ishaku concluded: “Once again, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Habila family. May God Almighty grant them the strength to bear this painful loss and grant the soul of the departed eternal rest.”
The minister was immediately informed of the incident, security agencies were invited to the scene, and Mary's body was taken to the morgue. The case continues to draw public attention, with many demanding transparency.
