Court Orders Remand of Suspected Lagos Rail Vandal Over Critical Infrastructure Theft
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has successfully secured the remand of a suspected railway vandal in Lagos State, marking a significant step in the ongoing crackdown against the destruction of vital rail infrastructure. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Bashiru Hafeez, was arrested on Thursday, March 26, 2026, by security personnel from Multi Eye Security Services during a routine patrol at the Mobolaji Johnson Train Station in Ebute-Metta.
During the arrest, Hafeez was reportedly found in possession of 15 pandrol clips, which are iron fasteners essential for holding rail tracks securely in place. Authorities believe these components were illicitly removed from the narrow gauge corridor in the Alagomeji area, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the rail system.
Safety Risks and Legal Proceedings
Railway officials have issued a stern warning regarding the removal of such critical components, emphasizing that it poses significant safety risks, including the potential for catastrophic train derailments. Following his apprehension, Hafeez was promptly handed over to the Nigerian Railway Police Command for a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution.
He has since been arraigned before a Lagos court, where he was remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned until April 24, 2026, allowing for further legal proceedings to unfold.
