Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Custodial Centre. This follows the revocation of his bail last week.
Court dismisses recusal application
The judge also dismissed Sowore's application for the trial judge to recuse himself from the matter over allegations of bias. Sowore is facing trial by the Department of State Services (DSS) on cybercrime charges after he allegedly called President Bola Tinubu 'a criminal' in a social media post.
Ruling and adjournment
In a short ruling delivered this morning, Justice Umar ordered Sowore to be kept in the correctional centre pending the hearing and determination of his motion for stay of the order for revocation of his bail and bench warrant. The judge subsequently adjourned the matter to June 24 for hearing of the application for stay of the order.
Last week, Justice Umar revoked the bail granted to Sowore following his failure to appear in court for his trial. The development has drawn attention to the ongoing legal proceedings against the activist.
