Delta Police Set to Arraign Ozoro Festival Suspects in Court This Week
The Delta State Police Command has officially declared that all individuals arrested in connection with the recent Ozoro festival incident will be formally charged in court this week. This development follows the completion of essential legal procedures required for prosecution.
Commissioner's Maiden Press Briefing Details Legal Process
Commissioner of Police Mr. Yemi John Oyeniyi revealed this information during his inaugural press conference held on Wednesday at the Police Headquarters in Asaba, the state capital. According to the police chief, the case file has already been forwarded to the Command's legal department for thorough vetting, which serves as a mandatory prerequisite before any prosecution can proceed.
"The case file has been sent to the legal department for vetting, and hopefully they will complete the process this week. The suspects involved will be charged to court accordingly," Commissioner Oyeniyi stated emphatically during the briefing.
Comprehensive Security Strategy Unveiled
Beyond addressing the Ozoro festival case specifically, Commissioner Oyeniyi utilized the platform to present a broader, more comprehensive security strategy designed to confront persistent threats throughout Delta State. He emphasized unequivocally that the protection of citizens' lives and property remains the Command's absolute top priority.
"The state faces security challenges, and our duty is to address these challenges while maintaining peace and order," Oyeniyi declared, adding that his leadership would concentrate on consolidating existing gains while confronting emerging threats with what he described as "renewed clarity."
Operational Overhaul and Tactical Coordination
The Commissioner disclosed detailed plans to completely overhaul the coordination of tactical units within the Command, stressing that all specialized teams would be properly supervised and perfectly aligned with the Nigeria Police Force's overall policing strategy. "My objective is to eliminate duplication of duties, enhance accountability, and ensure that all tactical deployments are intelligence-driven and result-oriented," he explained comprehensively.
Oyeniyi specifically identified kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and drug abuse as the primary drivers of insecurity within the state, promising a more proactive and coordinated response to these criminal activities. He particularly described drug abuse as a foundational problem that fuels other crimes, pledging to target major suppliers and dismantle criminal networks.
"We are going to tackle drug issues from the roots and go after the kingpins. Drug is the mother of all crimes—it gives other crimes the impetus to continue," the Commissioner declared with determination.
Strict Standards for Police Conduct
In a stern warning directed at officers under his command, Commissioner Oyeniyi reiterated that indiscipline and human rights violations would not be tolerated during his tenure. "There will be no tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of human rights, and unprofessional conduct, both on and off duty. All officers will be accountable for their actions and must operate within the ambit of the law," he stated firmly.
He stressed that discipline, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law represent "non-negotiable" expectations for all police personnel serving in Delta State.
Shift Toward Preventive Policing Model
Commissioner Oyeniyi announced that the Command would transition toward a more preventive policing model, which would include increased visibility of officers within communities, improved intelligence gathering capabilities, and closer collaboration with residents. He also pledged to strengthen partnerships with the state government, other security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth groups to enhance overall security outcomes.
