The Delta State Police Command has taken a 26-year-old woman into custody in connection with the trafficking of a 25-year-old victim to Côte d'Ivoire, where the young woman was forced into prostitution under the false promise of hairdressing training. The suspect, identified as Ese Betty Isiorho, was arrested by operatives of the Effurun Area Command, following a petition that exposed her alleged criminal scheme.
How the Victim Was Lured Abroad
According to the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, Isiorho allegedly approached her victim with an offer of vocational training in hairdressing in Côte d'Ivoire. The offer, which promised a better future, turned out to be a trap. Upon arrival, the victim was allegedly handed over to a woman named Madam Purity and forced into commercial sex work.
SP Edafe confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, August 2, noting that the petition which prompted the investigation provided crucial information about the suspect's activities. The operatives acted swiftly, locating and apprehending Isiorho before she could evade justice.
Victim Rescued and Returned to Nigeria
The police have since rescued the victim and facilitated her return to Nigeria. She has been reunited with her family and is currently receiving medical care. The police spokesperson stated that her physical and emotional wellbeing is a priority, and she will receive the necessary support to recover from the traumatic experience.
This rescue is a significant achievement for the Effurun Area Command, which acted on the petition and successfully dismantled part of the trafficking operation. It also underscores the importance of public vigilance in reporting suspicious activities.
Suspect Confesses and Names Accomplice
During interrogation, Isiorho allegedly confessed to trafficking the rescued victim as well as another woman in her twenties. Both victims were reportedly delivered to Madam Purity in Côte d'Ivoire, who allegedly forced them into prostitution. The confession has opened leads for investigators to track down the second victim and the other members of the trafficking syndicate.
Efforts are now focused on rescuing the second victim, who is believed to still be in Côte d'Ivoire. The police are also working to arrest Madam Purity, who remains at large. SP Edafe assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and that no stone will be left unturned.
Police Commissioner Commends Officers
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has praised the officers involved in the operation for their dedication and swift action. He reiterated the command's strong commitment to fighting human trafficking and all forms of organized crime within the state.
He also called on members of the public to support the police by providing credible information that could help dismantle trafficking networks. The prevention of such crimes, he noted, requires collective effort from the community.
