Dickson Reacts as Bandits Kill Ex-Lawmaker Despite Ransom

Former Bayelsa State Governor and serving Senator, Seriake Dickson, has expressed profound shock and grief over the brutal murder of his close friend and former federal lawmaker, Hon. Abba Anas Adamu, who was abducted and killed by bandits in Jigawa State, despite the payment of ransom.

Dickson Recalls Deep Bond with Slain Lawmaker

In a heartfelt statement, Dickson described the late Adamu as a loyal ally, brother, and committed nationalist. He noted that the two had been close since their days together in the House of Representatives around 2007. Dickson revealed that he appointed Adamu to chair the Nigeria First Forum during the political turbulence that followed President Umaru Yar’Adua’s illness and the succession crisis.

Dickson recounted how Adamu, alongside other patriots, worked tirelessly across ethnic and regional lines to ensure the emergence of the Doctrine of Necessity, which paved the way for then-Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to become Acting President. He specifically mentioned that Hon. Dr. Sani Abdu moved the motion for Jonathan to be made Acting President, while Hon. Abba Anas Adamu seconded it.

A Life of Service and Sacrifice

The former governor noted that Adamu lost political support in his home state due to his principled stand and commitment to the national cause, which prevented him from returning to the House. Despite this, their bond only grew stronger over the years. Dickson also revealed that he had nominated Adamu for a ministerial position, but it did not materialize due to local opposition.

Dickson further disclosed that Adamu was among the original members of the team that conceptualized the New Democratic Congress (NDC) movement. Although Adamu eventually joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) due to political realities, they remained close and continued to work together.

Condolences and Call for National Reflection

Dickson extended his deepest condolences to Adamu’s family, wives, children, associates, and all who were close to him. He described the loss as painful, especially given the cruel and tragic manner of his death. He prayed for strength for the family and eternal rest for the departed soul.

The senator also called for urgent action to address the worsening wave of insecurity, kidnappings, and killings plaguing the country, particularly in Northern Nigeria. He expressed his intention to join friends and associates in paying a formal condolence visit to the family in the coming days.
