The Ebonyi State Police Command has officially denied reports circulating on social media that bandits have attacked any part of the state. In a statement issued on Monday in Abakaliki, the command's spokesperson, Superintendent Joshua Ukandu, described the claims as false and intended to cause unnecessary panic among residents.
False Reports of Bandit Invasion
Mr. Ukandu specifically addressed viral reports alleging that bandits and herders had invaded the Nguzu Edda Community in Edda Local Government Area. He labeled these reports as misleading and urged the public to disregard them. The police spokesman emphasized that the command acted swiftly upon receiving information about a video in which a narrator made the allegations.
Police Response and Investigation
Upon learning of the viral video, the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi, Urunwa Okafor, directed the Divisional Police Officer of Edda Division to verify the claims. Simultaneously, tactical teams from the command headquarters were deployed to the area for a thorough assessment. Mr. Ukandu explained that security operatives conducted extensive search and combing operations in the affected bushes and surrounding areas.
Following the operation, the command categorically stated that no bandits or herdsmen were found lurking in Nguzu Edda Community. The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property across Ebonyi State.
Call for Vigilance and Verification
Mr. Ukandu urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command Control Room. He also advised the public to verify security-related information through official channels before sharing it on social media to prevent the spread of misinformation. The police commissioner assured residents that adequate security measures are in place to maintain law and order throughout the state.
