Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has disclosed that he has been living with diabetes since 1996, managing the condition for three decades, and has shared the personal strategies he uses to keep his health under control. During an interview on the African-a-list platform, Kosoko explained that his long experience with the disease has given him a deeper understanding of his own body, sometimes more than medical professionals.
Understanding His Body After 30 Years With Diabetes
Kosoko, a prominent figure in the Nigerian film industry, revealed that he became diabetic in 1996 and has since managed the condition for 30 years. He stated that this long period has allowed him to understand his health better than some doctors, asserting that he knows when to take action or when to take medication. He also dismissed the idea that a miracle can cure the ailment, emphasising the need to understand the causes of high blood sugar and to learn one's own body signals.
“I became diabetic in 1996. I've been managing it for 30 years, so you can easily understand why I understand my condition. In fact, I understand my health more than some doctors,” Kosoko said. He added, “I know when I need to take action or when I need to take medication. I refuse to allow anybody to deceive me into believing that a miracle can solve it. We are aware of the causes of high blood sugar, and as such, you just need to understand your ailment. Get to understand your body.”
Signs He Uses to Manage His Condition
The actor detailed specific signs that help him determine what his body needs at any given time. He explained that sometimes he feels the need for sugar, while at other times he requires rest and adequate sleep. Kosoko also highlighted the importance of staying active without subjecting himself to unnecessary stress, which he believes is key to maintaining good health.
“I have some signs that help me determine what I need. Sometimes, I feel like I need sugar. Other times, I need to rest and get good sleep. I also need to stay active without putting myself under stress. With that, you are good to go,” he stated during the interview.
Emphasis on Regular Medical Tests and Colonoscopy
Kosoko stressed the critical role of regular medical examinations in his health management routine. He revealed that he underwent a colonoscopy about a week before the interview, a procedure he described as not difficult. The test, he explained, is used to check for any ailments, particularly cancer or similar conditions, growing anywhere in the body.
“Of course, I don't joke with the different tests I take to ensure that things are in order. Just about a week ago, I had another test. They call it a colonoscopy. They check everything to detect whether any ailment, especially cancer or something similar, is growing anywhere in the body. It wasn't difficult,” Kosoko said.
Plans to Fund Check-Ups for Less Privileged Colleagues
Beyond his personal health, the veteran actor disclosed plans to support less privileged colleagues in the industry by paying for their medical check-ups. He intends to form a foundation dedicated to this cause, aiming to encourage others to prioritise their health before conditions worsen. Kosoko urged people to take proactive steps for their own well-being, noting that death can come at any time but one should at least make an effort to stay healthy.
“I want to form a foundation just for that. I will be taking my less privileged colleagues for check-ups to help them start doing something about their health. We should not wait until things get worse,” he explained. He added, “Anybody can die at any time. It all depends, but at least try for yourself. Try for yourself, and if death eventually comes, to God be the glory. He knows when He wants to call you. That's what you need to understand.”
