Building Collapse in Alakija Claims Eight Lives
Eight people, including a baby girl, have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a three-storey building in the Alakija area of Lagos State on June 25. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the casualty figures in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
The building, located on Old Ojo Road by Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Satellite Town, collapsed at approximately 11:37 a.m., triggering a large-scale emergency response involving multiple agencies.
Rescue Operation Update
Providing an update on the rescue operation, Oke-Osanyintolu said: “As of 4:20 p.m., a total of 26 persons have been rescued alive, while eight fatalities have been recorded, including a baby girl. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
Emergency responders, including LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigerian Police Force, are on-site conducting search and rescue efforts. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, but investigations are expected to follow.
Impact and Community Response
The collapse has caused panic among residents of Alakija and surrounding areas. Many gathered at the site, hoping for news of loved ones. The Lagos State Government has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to rescue any remaining trapped individuals.
Building collapses remain a recurring issue in Lagos, often attributed to poor construction practices, use of substandard materials, and non-compliance with building regulations. This incident underscores the need for stricter enforcement of safety standards.
